Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, making his debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam, expressed his excitement after defeating Pierre-Hugues Herbert with a score of 6-2, 6-3. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Norwegian, who shone brightly last year by winning four ATP Challenger titles—more than any other player on tour—and reaching the semi-finals in Jeddah. "We’re setting a high standard for the next generation," he stated, noting that four out of eight competitors from the Next Gen Finals have now progressed to the main draw. "It's inspiring to see my peers achieving great things on such prominent platforms. We might have a bit more hunger than the veterans, but it’s truly uplifting to see friends succeed."
Rafael Jodar also made headlines by advancing to the Grand Slam main draw on his very first attempt at qualifying. The Spaniard, who turned professional only a month prior after two years at the University of Virginia, overcame former Next Gen competitor Luca Van Assche with a scoreline of 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.
Rei Sakamoto, who impressively won all three of his qualifying matches without dropping a single set, shared his feelings about reaching this goal: "During preseason, I aimed to qualify for the main draw, so achieving that feels fantastic. The surface here suits my style quite nicely. I appreciate how my serve can bounce higher, giving me an edge to construct points effectively. Plus, I love the crowd and environment, which helps me feel at ease."
Another noteworthy player is Nishesh Basavareddy, who is now being coached by Gilles Cervara, the former coach of Daniil Medvedev. For Basavareddy, this marks his third consecutive appearance in a Grand Slam main draw. His path to qualification showcased his determination; he saved two match points against Sebastian Ofner in the second round before defeating George Loffhagen with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
On the other hand, Alexander Blockx, a finalist in Jeddah and the recent ATP Challenger champion in Canberra, faced disappointment in the final qualifying round. Despite entering on a seven-match winning streak, he had to retire due to a back injury while competing against Australia’s Jason Kubler.
Dane Sweeny stands out as the only other Australian to move forward through the qualifiers. The 24-year-old secured his place in the main draw for the first time since the 2024 Australian Open by defeating Stefano Travaglia with a close score of 7-6(6), 7-6(3).
