Argentina is gearing up for a significant energy development as its state-owned company, YPF, along with international partners, prepares to make a final investment decision on a massive $20 billion LNG project by mid-2026. This ambitious endeavor, known as the Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project, aims to tap into the country's vast shale gas reserves and propel it into the global energy market.
The Project's Scope:
The ARGLNG project is a collaboration between YPF, Italy's Eni, and XRG, a new energy investment company under Abu Dhabi's ADNOC. It involves the integrated development of upstream and midstream gas resources in the Vaca Muerta shale basin, one of the world's largest shale formations. The plan is to produce, process, transport, and liquefy gas for export, utilizing two floating liquefaction units with a combined capacity of 12 million tons per year.
Controversy and Delays:
But here's where it gets controversial. The project has faced delays, and the initial export timeline has been pushed back. Eni and YPF signed the final technical project description in October, targeting gas exports by 2030. However, according to YPF CEO Horacio Marin, exports from the 12 MTPA phase involving Eni and XRG are now expected to commence in 2030 or 2031. This delay could impact Argentina's ambitions to become a major regional and global gas supplier.
Infrastructure Challenges:
Argentina's challenge lies in building the necessary infrastructure to transport gas from production sites to regional pipelines and planned LNG export facilities. The country boasts substantial unconventional gas reserves in the Neuquen province, but without the right infrastructure, its potential remains untapped.
Potential Impact:
If all goes according to plan, Argentina's natural gas production could peak at 180 million cubic feet per day (Mmcd) by 2040, according to Wood Mackenzie. However, there's potential for even greater output, reaching up to 270 Mmcd, if the country successfully executes its LNG export projects. This could position Argentina as a significant player in the global energy landscape.
