The It: Chapter 3 Movie hinted at by Welcome to Derry Co-Creator
It: Welcome to Derry co-creator Barbara Muschietti has some exciting news for fans. It: Chapter Three could be a very real possibility. Stephen King's terrifying It universe includes several films and TV series. The remake films It: Chapter One (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019) were some of the most well-received adaptations in the franchise. Now, Muschietti revealed that there is a chance for there to be a third installment.
It: Welcome to Derry season 1 may have come to a close, but there are several stories in the series' first installment that could be further explored, including the infamous clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), who heavily implies that he does not die after It: Chapter Two. During a conversation with Marge (Matilda Lawler), he tells her that her future son, Richie and his friends would be the death of him. However, he added a sinister comment after, saying that he wasn't sure if it was an actual death or a rebirth. This one comment leaves a lot of possibilities for a third chapter.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Muschietti explained how there are still many gaps to be filled in the It universe as a whole, with a huge new group of characters to play around with, raising the potential of making her It movies a trilogy. While a lot of people find story gaps and plot holes annoying, the creator sees them as new opportunities instead. Every unanswered question could become a new story to tell. She added that she loved how King wrote the book and all the holes he left. She admitted that they might not have been intentional, but it was a happy accident for her and her brother, the show's other co-creator, Andy Muschietti.
The Muschietti siblings have been fans of the novel since they were teenagers. Barbara explained that their perception of the book has evolved significantly since then, as they are now in their early 50s with children of their own. The creator added that their viewers are always changing, so she is confident that she and her brother will have many more stories to tell. She reassured fans that she doesn't think that It: Welcome to Derry will be their last project in the It universe.
We shall see. It's a universe. It is a universe, and there are characters that are still fascinating. There are more gaps. When the great Stephen King wrote the book, I think that he left those holes on purpose. And if he didn't do it on purpose, they're just as great. They're great accidents, but for us, they are a wonder. In doing the first season, of course, we uncovered a lot of holes. And also, of course, we read the book for the first time when we were 14 and 15, and now we are 52 and 53. We're parents, and the perspective changes all the time. So, I don't know. I don't think this is the end, basically, is all I'll say.
It: Chapter Three and future seasons of It: Welcome to Derry are still up in the air at the time of this article's publication. While the Muschietti siblings and their co-creator Jason Fuchs have a three-season story arc for the show, it has not been officially renewed by HBO yet. However, considering the show's strong performance and critical acclaim, the chance for at least one more season is very likely.
