Hinkley Point C Tragedy: Companies Deny Responsibility in Site Supervisor's Death (2026)

In a notable legal case, three firms have denied responsibility in connection with the tragic death of a site supervisor at the Hinkley Point C power station. The incident, which claimed the life of 48-year-old Jason Waring from Nottinghamshire, occurred on November 13, 2022, during construction activities at the facility located in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Mr. Waring was employed by Bylor, one of the main contractors involved in the project. Bylor is a joint venture involving two of the companies that are now facing legal charges: Bouygues Travaux Publics SAS and Laing O'Rourke Delivery Limited. Additionally, NNB Generation Company (HPC) Ltd, a subsidiary established by EDF Energy for the Hinkley Point C development, has also entered a plea of not guilty in the proceedings taking place at Bristol Magistrates' Court. The case is scheduled for a subsequent hearing at Bristol Crown Court on January 30.

The decision to initiate legal action stemmed from an investigation conducted by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). NNB Generation Company (HPC) Ltd, as the principal contractor, is being accused of failing to adequately plan, manage, and oversee the construction phase, particularly concerning the coordination of health and safety measures. Meanwhile, Bouygues Travaux Publics SAS and Laing O'Rourke Delivery Limited are similarly charged with neglecting their responsibilities to ensure that construction work proceeded without health and safety risks.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mr. Waring's wife, Sarah, remembered him as the "life and soul of the party," highlighting the personal impact of this devastating event.

What do you think about the responsibilities of large companies when it comes to worker safety? Should they be held accountable for such tragic incidents, or do other factors come into play? Feel free to share your thoughts below.
