Temasek's Crypto Stance: 'Off the Table' After FTX Fiasco (2026)

Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd., a prominent investment firm based in Singapore, has made a strategic decision to steer clear of cryptocurrency investments, even four years after the high-profile collapse of FTX. This decision comes as a result of the substantial losses incurred from their investment in the now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange, which led to a $275 million writedown in 2022. The firm's focus has shifted to blockchain technology and its potential impact on the real economy, rather than direct crypto investments.

Nagi Hamiyeh, president of Temasek Global Investments, attributed this decision to the regulatory uncertainty surrounding the cryptocurrency sector. He stated, 'We don't have directly any investment in crypto, and I can't forecast what happens in the future... depending on the different regulations that might happen.' This cautious approach is a stark contrast to the firm's earlier involvement with FTX, which drew criticism and a loss of reputation for Singapore.

In a broader context, Temasek is also reevaluating its investment strategies. Hamiyeh emphasized the importance of practical applications of technology over frontier models. He believes that the adoption of artificial intelligence and the development of a commercial ecosystem around it are more crucial for long-term investors. Temasek aims to increase its AI exposure from 6% to 15% of its portfolio by 2031, focusing on areas like automation, robotics, and industrial process optimization.

The firm's investment strategy also extends to Europe, where it has poured approximately 12 billion euros in the past two years. Hamiyeh highlighted Europe's potential in luxury, consumer brands, energy transition, and family-owned industrials, emphasizing the firm's long-term, patient capital approach. The Middle East, despite ongoing conflicts, remains a region of interest for Temasek, with a focus on its long-term transformation story.

When it comes to defense contractors, Temasek takes a pragmatic stance. Hamiyeh stated that the firm considers dual-use technologies and their potential applications in both civilian and military settings. Biological and chemical weapons are explicitly excluded, and the firm's only exposure to the defense sector is through ST Engineering. This approach ensures that Temasek's investments are aligned with its sustainability and ethical investing goals.

In summary, Temasek's recent decisions reflect a more cautious and strategic approach to investments, focusing on practical applications of technology, long-term opportunities in Europe and the Middle East, and a pragmatic stance on defense contractors. This shift in strategy comes after the FTX debacle, highlighting the importance of risk management and a forward-looking perspective in the ever-evolving investment landscape.
