The world lost a musical giant on this day in 1988, a rock icon whose triumphs were often shadowed by unimaginable tragedy. Roy Orbison, the man behind the iconic warbling voice, the dark sunglasses, and the unforgettable hits, passed away at the age of 52 on December 6th, 1988. His story is a poignant reminder of the highs and lows of a life lived in the spotlight.
Orbison's voice, a unique blend of operatic drama and raw emotion, defined the sound of the 1960s. Songs like "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crying" weren't just hits; they were anthems. His style was reminiscent of Elvis Presley. Orbison's career began at Sun Records, the same label that launched Presley's career.
But here's where it gets controversial... Orbison's journey wasn't always smooth. His creative vision sometimes clashed with the music scene in Memphis, leading him to move to Monument Records in Nashville. This move proved pivotal, launching him into the stratosphere of musical success. By the mid-1960s, he was a household name.
However, just as his star ascended, his personal life began to unravel. Both Orbison and his wife, Claudette, experienced extramarital affairs. Tragically, Claudette died in a motorcycle accident. Two years later, Orbison's home burned down, claiming the lives of his two eldest sons.
To make matters worse, his music and career began to falter. By the end of the 1970s, he was practically a rock ‘n’ roll antiquity.
But just when it seemed like his star had faded, Orbison experienced a remarkable resurgence. He joined forces with Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra, leading to the formation of the supergroup, Traveling Wilburys, alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Tom Petty. Their first album was released in October 1988.
And this is the part most people miss... Orbison was on the cusp of a major comeback. He was finally regaining his confidence and reclaiming his place in the music world. But, tragically, he wouldn't live to see the full impact of his resurgence. He died of a heart attack just two months after the release of Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1.
Tom Petty recalled Orbison's renewed confidence during the making of the album "Mystery Girl." Petty said, "He started coming in and really taking charge of the sessions, and we were really pleased to see him get his confidence back. I wish he could’ve seen the success of that album. You know, when someone dies, you always hear nice things about them, but Roy really was that way, a very special person.”
