Era 9X, a giant SUV designed specifically for the Chinese market. Under the hood, or rather, beneath the flat floor of this electric SUV, lies Volkswagen's first range-extending gasoline engine—a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit from the EA211 family, producing 141 horsepower. This engine employs the Lambda One combustion method, ensuring optimal air-fuel balance (λ = 1) for efficient, clean-burning performance. It's a technology that Mazda and Porsche are also pursuing, aiming for the ideal 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio to maximize efficiency and minimize emissions.

The ID. Era 9X is available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, with single- or dual-motor setups. Its dimensions are impressive: 205 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 71.2 inches tall, riding on a 120.8-inch wheelbase. The all-wheel-drive variant comes standard with a 65.2-kWh battery, offering up to 249 miles of range under China's CLTC testing cycle. With a weight of up to 5,952 pounds, it's one of the heaviest vehicles Volkswagen has ever produced.

The design language is distinctly tailored to Chinese tastes, featuring unique colors like Fairy Green and Desert Gold. But the real question is: will this bold, screen-heavy approach resonate with buyers? Volkswagen is betting big on China, planning to launch over 20 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) by 2027. However, the competition is fierce, as evidenced by Audi's recent struggles in the market.
